  1. Kiev prisoners 'admit to being in Russian army'...

Two men captured by Ukrainian troops on Saturday have confessed to being members of the Russian armed forces, a report by European mediators says.

The pair were interviewed at a military hospital in Kiev by members of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

"They were armed but had no orders to attack," the security body said.

Russia has not responded to the latest claims, but has previously said the two men were no longer serving soldiers.

The men had travelled to Ukraine on a "reconnaissance mission", according to the OSCE.

"One of them said he had received orders from his military unit to go to Ukraine. He was to 'rotate' after three months. Both of them said they had been to Ukraine 'on missions' before," it added.

"One of them stressed repeatedly that there were no Russian troops involved in fighting in Ukraine."

  2. Father of captured Russian soldier: My son is former soldier...

Yevgeniy Yerofeyev, a Russian soldier captured by the Ukrainian military in the Donbas conflict zone on May 16, is a reserve officer and not a serviceman of the Russian army, his father, Vladimir Yerofeyev, said in an interview with Russian journalists, according to Ukrainian news broadcaster TSN.

It turned out that Vladimir Yerofeyev knew that his son was in Luhansk - his son told him about this before going.

"I did not try to dissuade him. He's an adult and an officer. He knows what to do," Vladimir Yerofeyev said.

However, Yerofeyev’s father says that his son is a former officer and a captain in Russia’s reserve forces. According to him, after the New Year his son retired from the army.

"I really do not know why he did that. I tried to persuade him [not to], but he resigned," he said.

  3. Amnesty International says both warring sides in eastern Ukraine are almost daily perpetrating war crimes, including torture and summary killings of prisoners...

In a new report, the rights group said Friday it has heard accounts from former captives of government and separatist forces of savage beatings, torture with electric shocks, kicking and stabbings.

Amnesty says it interviewed 17 captives of the separatists and 16 others held by Ukrainian government forces for its report.

Concern about the treatment of prisoners comes as Ukrainian authorities face scrutiny this week for publicly parading two men they say were Russian soldiers captured while fighting alongside separatists.

Amnesty is urging U.N. agencies and experts to visit detention sites in Ukraine to meet those being held by both sides.

  4. A Kiev court on Friday ordered two suspected Russian soldiers who were captured by Ukrainian troops in the separatist east to be placed in pre-trial detention until July 19...

Ukraine has charged Captain Yevgeny Yerofeyev and Sergeant Aleksander Aleksandrov with involvement in "terrorist activity" and promised to release them should they fully confess during a "public" trial.

Kiev is trying to use the men's detention to prove its longstanding belief that the Kremlin was covertly supporting the rebels with high-tech weapons and troops in order to unsettle Ukraine's pro-Western government.

Russia's defence ministry says the two were once members of the armed forces but had been demobilised by the time they crossed into the Ukrainian war zone nearly two months ago.

But both soldiers have confirmed to European observers and the media that they are still enlisted in the Russian armed forces.

They further accuse Moscow generals of washing their hands of their case for political reasons.

Aleksandrov's attorney said she still planned to appeal the ruling.

"The charges are groundless," defence lawyer Oksana Sokolovska told reporters.

Monitors from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) who visited the wounded soldiers at their Kiev military hospital said that both had "claimed that they were members of a unit of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation."....AFP
