Grexit to be hell: warns Greek industry chief

The past six years of painful sacrifices Greeks made under two bailouts to avert default "will look like paradise compared to the hell of a Grexit," a prominent representative of Greece's commerce and industry warned on Wednesday, as Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras headed to Brussels for crunch talks on a debt deal.

"If during the past six years we lost 25 percent of our GDP, return to the national currency drachma will cost us 40 percent of our purchasing power in one day. It could eventually reach 60-70 percent within weeks," Constantinos Michalos, Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, told a special parliamentary committee exploring the circumstances that led to the bailouts by the International Monetary Fund and European partners.

Michalos warned a Grexit nightmare would await Greece should a deal not be struck within the next few days.

Tsipras is expected to depart for Belgium on Wednesday evening to meet European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to further negotiations between Greece and international creditors.

According to media reports, Juncker will put on the table a draft deal proposal drawn up by Greece's lenders, while Tsipras will argue Athens' final proposal for an "honest compromise" on a new set of fiscal adjustment measures and reforms the debt-laden country would implement in exchange of further aid.

Time is running out as Athens faces a crucial deadline this Friday. Greece needs to repay a 305 million euros (343 million U.S. dollars) loan installment to the IMF on June 5 and more later in June and throughout the summer.

Many Greek officials have warned several times lately that Athens might not be able to cover its financial obligations without a deal, after struggling to make ends meet in the spring.

Ahead of the talks with Juncker, Tsipras, who was elected on an anti-austerity platform in January, expressed his confidence that Europe will eventually adopt a "realistic" outlook to resolve the Greek debt crisis for the benefit of a united continent.

According to Greek government sources, the two sides have narrowed the initial gap between their diverging views in several key issues, such as the targets for primary budget surpluses in 2015 and 2016 and pension reforms.

However, according to the same sources, there were still steps needed to be made in regards to labor market reforms and the sustainability of the Greek debt load.

A Euro Working Group conference scheduled for Wednesday was moved to Thursday, as Michalos, officials and analysts from both sides warned that each day passing by in uncertainty costs dearly to the Greek economy and society and the risk of a default and Grexit increased.

  1. Tsipras sees Greek deal, but differences remain after EU talks...

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras emerged from late-night talks with senior EU officials in Brussels saying a deal with creditors was "within sight" and that Athens would make a payment due to the IMF on Friday.

But while the European Commission said "progress was made in understanding each other's positions", the leftist-led Greek government still rejects benefit cuts and tax rises its EU and IMF creditors want before they release fresh loans to avert a bankruptcy that could disrupt the euro zone and world markets.

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who hosted Tsipras for a late dinner at the EU executive's headquarters along with the chair of euro zone finance ministers Jeroen Dijsselbloem, would reconvene their meeting in the coming days, officials said after the talks broke up in the early hours of Sunday...........REUTERS.....channelnewsasia.com

  3. Alexis Tsipras says talks in Brussels on Greece's debt crisis were "constructive" and he believes "an agreement is in sight"...

But he said Greece still rejected some proposals put forward by creditors.

Eurogroup chief Jeroen Dijsselbloem said the talks between Mr Tsipras and European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker were "very good" and would resume in a few days.

Greece has a €300m (£216m) IMF repayment due on Friday.

Mr Tsipras said that Greece and its creditors were now "very close to an agreement over primary surpluses" which he said would mean going forward "without the tough austerity measures of the past".

However, he added: "There are points that no-one would consider as a base for discussion. The talks will continue in the coming days."..........BBC

  5. Krisengipfel in Brüssel: Griechenland feilscht weiter...

  7. EU/IMF lenders demand asset sales, pension cuts in Greek proposal...

Greece's EU/IMF lenders have asked Athens to commit to sell off state assets, enforce pension cuts and press on with labor reforms, two sources familiar with the plan said on Thursday, demands that would cross the Greek government's "red lines".

If Greece were to accept the plan, lenders would aim to unlock 10.9 billion euros in unused bank bailout funds that were returned to the European Financial Stability Fund. This would enable Greece to cover its financial needs through July and August, the sources said.

In a five-page proposal presented to Greek Prime Alexis Tsipras in Brussels on Wednesday, EU/IMF lenders asked Athens to reduce spending on pensions by 1 percent of gross domestic product and promise not to reverse any legislated reforms, the sources said.

They also demanded Athens raise 1.8 billion euros - or 1 percent of GDP - by increasing value-added tax to 11 percent for items including drugs and 23 percent for items including electricity, the sources told Reuters.........REUTERS....todayonline.com

  8. Greece submits new reform plan to EU and IMF...

Greece has submitted a revised reform plan to the European Union (EU) and International Monetary Fund (IMF).

It comes days after Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras rejected a set of reforms put forward by EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker.

The EU and IMF want further economic reforms before they release €7.2bn (£5.3bn) of bailout funds.

It is believed Athens has conceded ground on VAT reforms, pensions and the country's primary surplus target.

The reform plan comes a day before Mr Tsipras meets the French president and German chancellor.

Last week, Greece "bundled up" a €300m (£221m) payment to the IMF, delaying the payment until the end of June when a total of €1.5bn is due to be paid.

Among the plans being put forward by the government, it is believed Greece is willing to increase VAT, but still maintain three rates: a standard rate, a reduced rate for food and medicine and a further reduced rate for books and hotel accommodation....BBC
