Ukrainian army must be ready for full-scale Russian invasion (Petro Poroshenko)

The Ukrainian armed forces have to be prepared for the resumption of the Russian-backed militant offensive in the Donbas and a full-scale invasion along the border with Russia, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Thursday during his annual address to the Verkhovna Rada "On the internal and external situation of Ukraine in 2015."

"We need to further increase the cost of strengthening the defense.

The Ukrainian army has to be ready for the resumption of the militant offensive in the Donbas, and a full-scale invasion along the border with the Russian Federation," Poroshenko said.

"We have to be really prepared for this.

Our diplomats have to exclude both scenarios, to strengthen the international coalition in support of Ukraine. We should prevent the lifting of sanctions against the aggressor before the resolution of the situation in the Donbas and the return of Crimea," he said.

  2. Ukraine's unrecognized republic official concerned by Poroshenko’s rhetoric ...

The Ukrainian president’s rhetoric is indicative of Kiev’s intentions that are far from peaceful and causes concern, a senior official from east Ukraine’s self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic said on Thursday about Petro Poroshenko’s address to the parliament.

Denis Pushilin, the Donetsk republic’s envoy to the Trilateral Contact Group that includes senior representatives from Ukraine, Russia and European security watchdog OSCE, said there was no alternative to peace accords signed in Minsk, Belarus, in February.

"We see that the president’s rhetoric does not suggest any peaceful solution. This gives us cause for concern and this is reflected in shelling of our territory, which is still continuing today along the entire line of contact also with the use of heavy weapons," Pushilin told Rossiya-24 television news channel.

  3. Russia 'aggressive' but no 'immediate threat': NATO chief ...

Russia's recent behaviour is more aggressive but does not pose an immediate threat to NATO, the alliance's chief Jens Stoltenberg said on June 4.

"We do not see an immediate threat from the East against any NATO country," Stoltenberg told Norwegian radio NRK, when asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin was a threat to peace.

"What we see is increased unpredictability, increased insecurity, increased nervousness," the former Norwegian prime minister said during his first official visit to his native country since taking over as NATO secretary general last year.

Stoltenberg painted a picture of a heavily re-militarised Russia "which is unfortunately now more aggressive than it was a few years ago," and which doesn't hesitate "to resort to military force to re-draw the borders in Europe," citing Crimea, Ukraine and Georgia as examples.

Like Ukrainian authorities, Western countries accuse Russia -- which annexed the Crimean peninsula in early 2014 -- of arming the rebellion in eastern Ukraine and of having sending regular troops there, which Moscow fiercely denies.

"Our aim is to cooperate with Russia," Stoltenberg said.

"That benefits NATO, that benefits Russia," he added.........hurriyetdailynews.com
