Turkish army clashes with Islamic State group after soldier killed

The Turkish military on Thursday exchanged fire with Islamic State (IS) militants across the Syrian border after a Turkish soldier was killed by fire from an area controlled by the jihadists.

The non-commissioned officer was killed in the Turkish border region of Kilis, the state Anatolia news agency said, three days after a suicide bombing blamed on IS jihadists killed 32 people.

Anatolia said the fire came from an area controlled by IS in Syria. The Dogan news agency said four soldiers had been wounded.

Turkish tanks from the fifth armoured brigade then responded by opening fire on targets controlled by IS jihadists in Syria, NTV television said, adding that one IS militant had also been killed.

The clashes are among the most serious yet between the Turkish army and IS, which has seized swathes of Iraq and Syria right up to the Turkish border.

  1. Turkey allows US to use airbase for strikes...

Turkey is to let the US carry out airstrikes against the Islamic State group from a key military base near the Syrian border, US officials have said.

The agreement, yet to be confirmed by Ankara, follows months of negotiations.

The deal comes after Turkey and IS fighters exchanged fire near the Turkey-Syria border, with one soldier killed and two more injured.

On Monday, 32 people were killed in a suicide attack in a Turkish town on the Syrian border blamed on IS.

The agreement was finalised in a phone call between President Barack Obama and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday. It was confirmed by US officials speaking on condition of anonymity.

The use of the Incirlik airbase broadens the US military's ability to strike IS targets - one US official told the New York Times it was a "game changer".

Once used in raids against former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, the base is near to Turkey's long border with Syria, and significantly narrows the distance to the IS stronghold of Raqqa............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-33646314
