The decision by President Barack Obama, which could deepen the US role in Syria's conflict, aims to shield a still-fledging group of Syrian fighters armed and trained by the United States to battle Islamic State militants -- not forces loyal to Assad.
But in Syria's messy civil war, Islamic State is only one of the threats to the US recruits. The first batch of US-trained forces deployed to northern Syria came under fire on Friday from other militants, triggering the first known US airstrikes to support them.
US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to confirm details of the decision, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, said the United States would provide offensive strikes to support advances against Islamic State targets.
The United States would also provide defensive support to repel any attackers.
US officials have long played down the idea that Assad's forces - which have not fired on US-led coalition aircraft bombing Islamic State targets in Syria - would turn their sights on the US-backed Syrian rebels. But they cannot rule out the possibility, perhaps in an unintentional clash.
The Pentagon and the White House declined to discuss the decision on rules of engagement or confirm comments by the unnamed US officials.

ReplyDeleteLe président américain Barack Obama a autorisé l'utilisation de l'aviation en vue de protéger les forces d'opposition syrienne soutenues par Washington face aux troupes gouvernementales et aux djihadistes de l'Etat islamique.
Selon le Wall Street Journal, cette décision pourrait accroître le risque de conflit ouvert entre les Etats-Unis et le régime de Bachar al-Assad.
Cependant, les militaires américains estiment qu'une confrontation directe entre les forces fidèles au gouvernement de Damas et l'armée US reste peu probable.
"Les troupes nouvellement formées se concentrent sur la lutte contre le groupe radical Etat islamique et non contre le régime syrien, et elles ne seront pas déployées dans les zones contrôlées par Damas", explique le quotidien.
Le conflit syrien, qui dure depuis mars 2011, a fait selon les estimations de l'Onu plus de 220.000 morts. Les forces gouvernementales syriennes affrontent plusieurs groupes de combattants armés, dont les plus actifs sont l'Etat islamique et le Front al-Nosra.

Der amerikanische Präsident Barack Obama hat nach Angaben aus Regierungskreisen angeordnet, die vom amerikanischen Militär ausgebildeten Kämpfer in Syrien auch vor Angriffen der Regierungstruppen zu schützen. Damit könnte es zu einer direkten Auseinandersetzung zwischen amerikanischen Einheiten und syrischen Regierungstruppen kommen.
Konflikt kann nicht ausgeschlossen werden
Die Luftwaffe werde die Aufständischen aus dem amerikanischen Rekrutierungsprogramm gegen die Extremisten-Miliz „Islamischer Staat“ (IS) unterstützen, verlautete am Sonntagabend (Ortszeit) aus Kreisen der Regierung in Washington. Allerdings werde man diese Einheiten nun auch gegen jeden anderen Angreifer verteidigen. Regierungsvertreter lehnten eine offizielle Stellungnahme ab. Zuerst hatte das „Wall Street Journal“ von dem Vorhaben berichtet.
Die Vereinigten Staaten gehen mit Luftangriffen direkt gegen den IS vor, der große Teile Syriens unter seine Kontrolle gebracht hat. Zudem bildet das amerikanische Militär seit Mai Einheimische im Kampf gegen die Islamisten aus. ReplyDeleteAnkara and Washington are hoping that together with the Syrian rebels they would sweep Islamic State fighters from a strip of land along the Turkish border.
"Moscow has stressed multiple times that helping Syrian opposition, let alone helping with financial or (military) technical means, would lead to a further desalinization of the situation in the country," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
