Austrian Army to Assist Police on Border With Hungary

The Austrian army sent soldiers to the border with Hungary to assist police by taking in refugees and ensuring security in the south of Burgenland and Styria states, the Ministry of Defense and Sports said in a statement Saturday.

"The army has sent slightly over 1,000 soldiers for the first time for a police operation to ensure security [by assisting refugees]. Today, both southern Burgenland state as well as southern Styria were strengthened with soldiers," the statement said.

The ministry noted that assistance in transporting refugees and providing them with food remained the main tasks for the military.

According to Austrian law enforcement, some 10,000 people are expected to arrive in Burgenland on Saturday after a temporary decrease in the number of migrants reaching Austria.

On Friday, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz urged the creation of so-called safe zones in war-torn Syria as a measure to prevent more refugees from arriving in Europe.

Over 500,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in the European Union since the beginning of 2015, according to the European Commission. According to the International Organization for Migration, almost 40 percent of the refugees arriving in Europe are from Syria.

"A mother who had apparently recently given birth had to be taken to hospital," Red Cross spokesman August Bauck told the APA news agency.

Austrian police were expecting more migrants to arrive across the border.

  2. Austria saw the arrival of at least 10,000 migrants on Saturday, amid bitter rows among EU nations on how to handle the growing crisis.

The migrants were initially sent into Hungary by Croatia, which said it was unable to cope with the 20,000 who had arrived since Wednesday.

Hungary in turn shipped them on to Austria, accusing Croatia of breaking rules by failing to register migrants.

However, some told the BBC that Hungary had not registered them either.

On Saturday Austrian police said they were expecting at least 10,000 arrivals, while the head of the Austrian Red Cross, Gerry Foitik, later told Austria Presse Agentur (APA) that between 12,000 to 13,000 people had entered the country over the course of the day.

The deputy police chief of Austria's Burgenland state, Christian Stella, told APA that Hungary had not given enough warning...........BBC
