Iraq Sharing Intelligence with Russia, Iran, Syria in Fight against ISIL/ISIS

Iraq says it has reached a deal on intelligence and security cooperation with Russia, Iran and Syria to counter the ISIL terrorists’ threat.

The announcement on Saturday from the Iraqi military's joint operations command cited "the increasing concern from Russia about thousands of Russian terrorists committing criminal acts within ISIL."

Russian news agency Interfax quoted a military diplomatic source in Moscow as saying the Baghdad coordination center would be led on a rotating basis by officers of the four countries, starting with Iraq.

The source added a committee might be created in Baghdad to plan military operations and control armed forces units in the fight against Islamic State.

  • The Russian defense ministry declined to comment on the reports.

Since the summer of 2014, Iraq has been grappling with deadly militancy across its territory, with ISIL now controlling some areas in the west and north of the country but are confronted by the Iraqi army and other volunteering groups.

  1. Russia surprises US with accord on battling ISIS...

For the second time this month, Russia moved to expand its political and military influence in the Syria conflict and left the United States scrambling, this time by reaching an understanding, announced on Sunday, with Iraq, Syria and Iran to share intelligence about the Islamic State.

Like Russia's earlier move to bolster the government of President Bashar Assad by deploying warplanes and tanks to a base near Latakia, Syria, the intelligence-sharing arrangement was sealed without notice to the United States. US officials knew that a group of Russian military officers were in Baghdad, but they were clearly surprised when the Iraqi military's Joint Operations Command announced the intelligence sharing accord on Sunday.

It was another sign that President Vladimir Putin of Russia was moving ahead with a sharply different tack from that of the Obama administration in battling the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, by assembling a rival coalition that includes Iran and the Syrian government................http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com
