Saudi Arabia shelters 500,000 Syrian since 2011

Saudi Arabia has sheltered 500,000 Syrian refugees and 1.5 million residents since Syria collapsed into civil war in 2011, Al Hayat newspaper reported on Thursday.

Saudi has made efforts to ensure refugees a decent living and allowed Syrian residents to bring their parents and family members to Riyadh, a Saudi government official said.

All of the refugees are provided with valid resident permits to get the rights for education, labor and health services, the official said, adding that more than 100,000 Syrians are receiving free education in the oil-rich state and treated equally with local students.

  • Saudi Arabia's announcement came as the migrants crisis in Europe deepens, and the world urges the Gulf states to do more to deal with the increasing number of Syrian refugees who are fleeing their home country.

Over four million refugees have fled Syria since the war started in 2011, according to the latest data from the UN refugee agency.

  1. Arab Press Blasts Gulf Rulers on Syrian Refugee Crisis ...

Gulf rulers are coming under unusually sharp criticism from the region’s media for not doing more to help with the Middle East refugee crisis and for not formally admitting Syrians fleeing their war-shattered country.

Most of the criticism is from media outlets not owned by state authorities, with Qatar’s English-language Gulf Times leading the way.

It noted that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been nicknamed “Mama Merkel” by Syrian refugees for her decision to admit more of them into Germany than any other country. And the paper last week scorned “the cash-rich Gulf countries” for not issuing a collective statement on the crisis and for not “coming up with a strategy to help the migrants who are overwhelmingly Muslim.”

It accused the region’s rulers of displaying indifference to the plight of Syrian refugees.............http://www.voanews.com/content/arab-press-criticizes-gulf-rulers-on-syrian-refugee-crisis/2955448.html
