The German parliament has approved plans for the country to take on a direct role in the battle against the so-called Islamic State group in Syria, answering France's appeal for help.
Parliament voted for the mandate for the deployment of Tornado reconnaissance jets, a frigate and up to 1,200 troops by an overwhelming majority of 445 votes in favour and 146 against. Seven politicians abstained.
Germany, however, will not join countries like the UK, France, US and Russia in conducting airstrikes.
France carried out surveillance missions over Libya
French military aircraft have carried out reconnaissance and intelligence flights over areas controlled by IS in Libya and plan to carry out further missions over the north African state, a presidential press document showed.
According to a press dossier provided ahead of President Francois Hollande's visit to the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier off the coast of Syria, two missions were carried out on 20 and 21 November around the towns of Sirte and Tobruk.
The missions would be the first time Paris has publicly acknowledged carrying out operations over Islamic State zones in Libya. Sirte is controlled by Islamic State.
"Other intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance flights are also planned," the document showed.
Neither the defence ministry nor president's office were immediately available for comment.
