Russia demands compensation from Turkey for downed plane.-- Turkey detains 27 Russian ships

Russia has demanded that Turkey pay compensation for shooting down a Russian military plane near the Turkish-Syrian border last month, RIA news agency reported.

Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Meshkov said it was up to Turkey to guarantee that a similar incident would not take place again in the future.

Turkey last month downed a Russian bomber at the Syrian border, leading to the biggest crisis in ties between the two countries since the end of the Cold War.

After the downing of the warplane, which led to the deaths of a pilot and another serviceman who attempted to rescue him, Russia introduced economic sanctions against Turkey and beefed up its firepower at its airbase in Syria.

  • As the countries continue to spar, Turkey accused Russia on Wednesday of playing up a military threat from Ankara that does not exist.

Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic said that "Russia's military elements have been acting for some time as if there is a perceived threat from Turkey, which is an exaggerated situation and has nothing to do with reality."

"Turkey is not acting in an aggressive way towards Russia's military targets and our main hope is not to escalate the tensions."

Meanwhile, Turkish daily Habertürk reported Wednesday that Turkey has detained a total of 27 Russian ships in retaliation since the crisis over the downed plane between the two countries began.

A Russian destroyer in the Aegean Sea on Sunday opened fire to avoid a collision with a Turkish fishing boat, the defense ministry said, an incident that further intensified the tensions between the two countries.

"The crew of the Russian patrol ship Smetlivy which was located 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) from the Greek island of Lemnos in the northern part of the Aegean Sea avoided collision with a Turkish seiner," the ministry said, adding that the crew had fired small arms to warn the boat.
