All roads in New York shut down as storm pummels East Coast

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo imposed a travel ban on the nation’s largest city as a fast-moving storm climbed up the East Coast on Saturday, dumping more than a foot of snow in Washington and stranded motorists for hours on icy interstates in Pennsylvania and Kentucky.

All roads, as well as bridges and tunnels in and out of New York officially closed at 2:30 p.m., with only emergency vehicles allowed. MTA bus service was canceled at noon, and train and subway lines located above ground were ordered to shut down at 4 p.m., Cuomo said at a news confernce.

New York could see 25 to 30 inches of snow, with winds gusting up to 50 mph, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio warned earlier in the day.

That would make it one of the top five storms in city history. De Blasio implored residents to stay indoors...

  2. US blizzard 2016: New York lifts travel ban as clear-up begins...

A travel ban on cars in New York City has ended as the east coast of the US begins digging out from the weekend's massive snowstorm.

But in Washington DC, the metro is set to remain closed and air travel in the region faces further disruption.

As five states saw snowfall of three feet (91cm) or more, the hazards of shovelling snow were brought home by at least six deaths.

A further 12 people have died in other snow-related incidents since Friday.

The storm, dubbed Snowmageddon and Snowzilla on social media, is lessening and heading for the Atlantic Ocean.

It has affected some 85 million people, cutting power to 200,000 people. The heaviest fall was recorded in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, which had 40.5in (103 cm).

Some 7,000 flights were cancelled this weekend and disruption is to continue into the working week, with at least 615 cancelled for Monday.
