Democratic Progressive Party's Tsai Ing-wen becomes Taiwan's first woman president

Democratic Progressive Party's Ms Tsai Ing-wen has won Taiwan's presidential election, becoming the island's first female president.

As a child, Ms Tsai Ing-wen was not deemed as one who would grow up to have a successful career.

On Saturday (Jan 16), the 59-year-old confounded those early expectations and made Taiwanese history by becoming the island's first woman president.

The Democratic Progressive Party candidate was elected into power by a landslide victory, winning about 60 per cent of the votes.

Mr Eric Chu of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) conceded defeat on Saturday night and announced that he would step down as the KMT chairman.

"I am sorry, I have let you down. We have failed. We did not work hard enough," Mr Chu said, surrounded by sombre-looking supporters.

Ms Tsai arrived at the DPP headquarters in Taipei at 4.15pm, to track the counting of votes after polls closed at 4pm.

She will be giving a press conference in the evening followed by an address to supporters...

    1. Taiwan's new leader disappears from Chinese social network...

Freshly elected Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen disappeared from China's most popular social network on Saturday, with censors working swiftly to block any mention of the Beijing-wary politician as she stormed to victory on the island.

Searches for "Tsai Ing-wen" and "Taiwan elections" on the Twitter-like Weibo network turned up a message that read: "According to relevant laws, regulations and policies, the results for this search cannot be shown," a signal for words blocked by China's army of Internet gatekeepers....AFP

    2. After vote, China tells Taiwan to abandon independence 'hallucination'...

Taiwan should abandon its "hallucinations" about pushing for independence, as any moves toward it would be a "poison", Chinese state-run media said after a landslide victory for the island's independence-leaning opposition.

Tsai Ing-wen and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won a convincing victory in both presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday, in what could usher in a new round of instability with China, which claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own.

Tsai pledged to maintain peace with its giant neighbor China, while China's Taiwan Affairs Office warned it would oppose any move toward independence and that Beijing was determined to defend the country's sovereignty.....reuters.com
