EU commissioners visit Turkey to discuss ‘sticky’ issues, notably refugee crisis

Two top executives of the European Union are scheduled to hold talks with Turkish leaders in the capital city of Ankara, as European governments are feeling overwhelmed with the numbers of Europe-bound migrants escaping war and poverty in Syria, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

EU High Representative and Vice-President (HR/VP) Federica Mogherini and EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn will attend a Turkey-EU ministerial political dialogue meeting on Jan. 25, where Turkey will be represented by Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and EU Minister Volkan Bozkır.

The key meeting in Ankara comes only a few days after German Chancellor Angela Merkel hosted her Turkish counterpart, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, in Berlin on Jan. 22.

The two leaders pledged to continue to work intensively together to solve Europe’s migrant crisis - not only to stem the flow of people but to improve conditions in Turkey’s refugee camps and to bring about a peace deal in Syria.

Merkel, meanwhile, reiterated her call for a European solution and promised Turkey 3 billion euros ($3.24 billion) in EU aid to cope with more than 2 million Syrian refugees in the country.

  1. EU closely monitoring Turkey on curbing migrant flows, says EU Commissioner...

The European Union is closely watching whether Turkey’s actions are affecting the record flow of migrants to Europe, after the EU reached a $3 billion deal with Ankara to curb migration last year, European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said on Jan. 25.

The composition of refugees transiting through Turkey has changed, with Syrians fleeing the civil war now making up less than 40 percent, Hahn said at a joint news conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, EU Affairs Minister Volkan Bozkır and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini, after talks with Turkish officials. Syrians were by far the largest group in 2015.

Mogherini, meanwhile, said she was “very confident” that the EU would deliver the promised 3 billion euros to Turkey in return for its help in stemming the flow of migrants to Europe. The fund has so far been stalled due to objections from Italy.

“I am very confident that the amount that was decided will be there in very reasonable timing,” Mogherini said.

She stressed that the EU must do more to support Turkey in its effort to care for the refugees, adding that improving conditions within Syria through a transition process was extremely important......http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/eu-closely-monitoring-turkey-on-curbing-migrant-flows-says-eu-commissioner.aspx?pageID=238&nID=94296&NewsCatID=510
