Pakistan army chief confirms death sentence to 9 militants

Pakistan Army chief, General Rahell Sharif on Friday confirmed that death sentences had been awarded to another nine hardcore terrorists, who were involved in committing heinous offences relating to terrorism, the military said.

They were involved in attacks on a mosque in army area, an Inter Services Intelligence facility in the city of Multan in Punjab province, attacks on law enforcement agencies, kidnapping and killing civilians in the city of Lahore, a military statement said.

These convicts were tried by military courts that were set up after the terrorist attack on an army school in December 2014.

The convicts have the right of appeal to the president under the law.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had earlier advised the president to reject all mercy petitions of the militants as they had been responsible for the killing of the security men and civilians.

The military courts were established for the speedy trial of the militants with a wide-range of consensus and amendment in the constitution.
