Libya faces obstacles to move unity government to Tripoli

Libya's internationally recognized government warned in a statement on Friday against "imposing the unity government," saying such a move would increase the division of the country.

"The Libyan government warns the international community against moves taken by some international parties to impose this government, with no regard to the political agreement, the statement said.

Fayez Serraj, Prime Minister of the Unity Government and head of the Tunis-Based presidential council, told a Libyan channel on Thursday that his government will be in the capital Tripoli in a few days.

Serraj said that the council made a plan, involving police and military forces in the capital and some armed groups, as well as the United Nations, in order to secure and facilitate the government's move to the capital.

Libya suffers a political division with two rival political powers, one in the west and another in the east, battling for legitimacy since the civil war of 2014 that revived the expired General National Congress (parliament).

The statement said that such a move "would deepen the political and economic crises of the country and increase the state of division."
