"Unequivocally, if Assad does not adhere to this, there will clearly be repercussions," Kerry told reporters at the State Department. "And one of them may be the total destruction of the ceasefire and they go back to war."
- Kerry's warning came amid renewed violence in Aleppo, Syria's largest city, where the al-Nusra Front and other groups have engaged in bitter fighting with Syrian military over the past ten days.
"There may be even other repercussions that are being discussed, but that is for the future to determine," Kerry said.
- The Syrian government has accused the "rebels" in Aleppo of violating the US-Russia-backed truce, which went into effect in late February.
On Monday, Kerry met with United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in Geneva in an effort to restore the fragile truce and seek more support for a political transition.
De Mistura expressed deep concern over deteriorating situation and continued violence in Syria, particularly in Aleppo, warning that "it is putting the cessation of hostilities at a high risk."
On Tuesday, Kerry also urged Assad to start a political transition by Aug. 1.
"So we're now coming up to May. So either something happens in these next few months, or they are asking for a very different track," Kerry said, without specifying what actions the United States will take.

ReplyDeleteLe secrétaire d'Etat américain John Kerry a menacé mardi le président syrien Bachar al-Assad de "répercussions" si son régime ne respecte pas le nouveau cessez-le-feu actuellement discuté entre Washington et Moscou, notamment pour la ville d'Alep."Si Assad n'adhère pas à cela, il y aura clairement des répercussions et l'une d'entre elles pourrait être la destruction totale du cessez-le-feu et (le retour) à la guerre" en Syrie, a averti M. Kerry devant la presse au département d'Etat. "Je ne crois pas que la Russie veuille cela. Je ne pense pas que le (régime) Assad puisse profiter de cela", a ajouté le chef de la diplomatie américaine de retour de Genève où il a tenté lundi de sauver la cessation des hostilités en principe en vigueur depuis le 27 février entre le régime et l'opposition sur tout le territoire syrien. Sans être plus précis, M. Kerry a évoqué également "d'autres répercussions en discussions, mais c'est l'avenir qui le déterminera".
Le secrétaire d'Etat est l'un des artisans du processus diplomatique international et politique intersyrien pour tenter de sortir de la guerre dans le pays. Mais il avait évoqué il y a quelques mois un "plan B", sans plus de précisions, en cas d'échec de la diplomatie. "A l'heure qu'il est, nous travaillons dur pour essayer de mettre cela (le cessez-le-feu) en place afin de protéger l'intégrité d'Alep", a ajouté John Kerry, à propos du projet d'une nouvelle trêve négocié actuellement entre les Etats-Unis et la Russie, les deux grandes puissances qui comptent dans le conflit syrien. Moscou a déclaré mardi espérer un cessez-le-feu "dans les prochaines heures" à Alep, la grande ville divisée du nord de la Syrie où de nouveaux combats et bombardements ont fait 19 morts, touchant encore une fois un établissement médical.
