North Korea fired Saturday what appeared to be a submarine-launched ballistic missile from off its east coast but the projectile failed in flight, South Korea's military said, amid renewed tensions in the region.
The launch took place around 11:30 a.m. South Korea time from waters southeast of the coastal port city of Sinpo, South Hamgyong Province, the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
The move came a day after South Korea and the United States said they will deploy an advanced U.S. antimissile defense system in South Korea to counter threats from North Korea.
