Five Russian military personnel were believed to have been killed Monday after their Mi-8 transport helicopter was downed over the Syrian province of Idlib, the Kremlin said.
"As far as we know from the information we've had from the defense ministry, those in the helicopter died, they died heroically, because they were trying to move the aircraft away to minimize victims on the ground," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.
A statement from the Russian Defense Ministry said that the crew had been delivering humanitarian aid to Aleppo, the Russian TASS news agency reports.
"A Russian Mi-8 military transport helicopter was shot down from the ground after delivering humanitarian aid to Aleppo," the statement said. "There were three crewmembers and two officers from Russia’s center for the reconciliation of warring factions in Syria on board."
The statement added that "all available resources have been employed with the aim to find out what happened to the Russian military servicemen."...
