KRG leader Barzani: Peshmerga forces will not enter Mosul

The Kurdistan Region President stated on Sunday that Peshmerga forces will participate in the Mosul liberation operation but will not enter the city.

In a meeting with the Sunni Arab tribal leaders from the Nineveh province, Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, stressed on the participation of Peshmerga forces in the liberation of Mosul.

According to a statement by the Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP) website, President Barzani said that “those who have been helping the Islamic State (IS) and approve IS’ ideology will face the same fate as IS.”

“Nineveh has a special status, therefore, before the operation begins, there should be a political agreement for post-IS Mosul,” Barzani continued.

“It is important that all of the components of the province are certain of their future, so they do not face massacres again,” the President added.

Barzani stated that the operation wouldn’t be a success without the participation of Peshmerga.

He also assured the tribal leaders that “Peshmerga forces will participate but would not enter Mosul city, they would only provide backup.”

The Sunni tribal leaders praised Peshmerga forces and asked the Kurdistan Region President for the Kurdish forces’ participation in Mosul’s liberation.

According to the KRP statement, the leaders’ desire for Peshmergas involvement is to ensure the protection and safety of the people in the city.

On July 22, Khalid al-Obeidi, the Iraqi Defense Minister, announced that Peshmerga forces would participate in the Mosul liberation operation only if it were required.

Nechirvan Barzani, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister, previously announced that Peshmerga would play a “central role” in the Mosul offensive.

The PM added that they would “coordinate with Baghdad, the international coalition, and particularly the United States.”
