6.7-magnitude earthquake triggers 'small' tsunami in Turkey. Two killed on Greek island of Kos

At least two people were killed on the Greek island of Kos
A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck along the southwestern coast of Turkey early Friday, triggering what seismologists described as a "small" tsunami.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre tweeted that "a small tsunami is confirmed" and urged people to avoid beaches in the area and to seek higher ground.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the initial temblor took place at about 1:30 a.m. Both the USGS and EMSC reported multiple aftershocks since then.

No damage or injuries were reported, though officials warned people not to stay indoors.

The epicenter of the strongest quake was near the resort town of Bodrum and the Greek island of Kos. The quake was situated at a shallow 6.2 miles below the seabed.

  • At least two people were killed on the Greek island of Kos on Friday when a magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook the popular summer resort holiday destinations of the Dodecanese Islands in Greece and the Aegean coast of Turkey.

The island of Kos was nearest to the epicentre and appeared to be the worst-hit. Giorgos Halkidios, Kos regional government official, said the number of injured was more than 100.

"Two or three of them are in serious condition and are in surgery," he said.

He said the injured included people who were underneath a building that collapsed. Ferry services were suspended due to damage at Kos's main port, where a 14th-century fortress also was damaged. A minaret from an old mosque also was damaged.

  • Magnitude Mw 6.7
