Media outlets in Turkey and Germany upped the severity of language of
new reporting, amid rising tension between the countries that followed
Berlin initiative to halt Turkey’s European Union bid. The two have been in conflict since German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s statements on the ongoing Gezi Protests, and the daily newspapers of both countries have decided to join in.
German Bild carried Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on its cover with the caption “New Dictator,” depicting Erdoğan with a Hitler-like moustache. The cover was then featured on the front page of Turkish daily Takvim, who itself dubbed Merkel a “Nazi.”
Takvim also mentioned a 10-page supplement published by Der Spiegel on the issue of the Gezi protests, which the newspaper said would be distributed in Turkey as well.
Germany insisted last week on halting EU negotiations with Turkey as a response to Ankara’s recent police crackdown on Gezi Park protesters. The EU had been set to open talks on Chapter 22 next week, which would be the first new chapter to be opened in nearly 2.5 years. Berlin’s decision has stirred a huge reaction in Ankara, with EU Minister Egemen Bağış linking Berlin’s move to the upcoming parliamentary election campaign in Germany.
Daily Takvim has also recently been in the news for releasing a fake interview with senior CNN anchorwoman Christiane Amanpour on June 18, which claimed to feature a “confession” from Amanpour in which she “admitted” receiving money for giving the protests air time.
Amanpour was told of the “interview” soon after and posted the following on Twitter as a response: “Shame on you Takvim for publishing a fake interview with me.”
The Takvim reporter behind the story said the interview was “just sarcasm.”

"Μη λυγίζετε" λέει το Spiegel στους Τούρκους διαδηλωτές.....
ReplyDelete"Μη λυγίζετε" είναι το μήνυμα προς τους τούρκους διαδηλωτές του γερμανικού περιοδικού Der Spiegel το οποίο κυκλοφορεί για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία του με εξώφυλλο στα τουρκικά, ενώ αφιερώνει περίπου δέκα σελίδες σε ρεπορτάζ στα τουρκικά και τα γερμανικά σχετικά με τις διαδηλώσεις κατά του τούρκου πρωθυπουργού Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν.
"Boyun Egme" ("Μη λυγίζετε"), διαμηνύει στους διαδηλωτές το περιοδικό στο εξώφυλλό του στο οποίο εμφανίζεται μια νεαρή γυναίκα να κρατάει ένα πλακάτ με τη φράση αυτή.
Για πρώτη φορά στα 66 χρόνια της ύπαρξής του, το άρθρο της πρώτης σελίδας του περιοδικού είναι γραμμένο και στα τουρκικά.
"Τα γεγονότα στην Τουρκία, επίσημα υποψήφια για ένταξη στη ΕΕ, οι φραστικές επιθέσεις του τούρκου υπουργού Ευρωπαϊκών Υποθέσεων κατά της καγγελαρίου Μέρκελ, η καταστολή, σε καμία περίπτωση δεν αποτελούν εσωτερική υπόθεση όπως υποστηρίζει ο Ερντογάν τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες", σημειώνει το περιοδικό.
"Αυτά μάς αφορούν όλους: τους Τούρκους και τους Γερμανούς, τους Γερμανούς τουρκικής καταγωγής, τους Ευρωπαίους", τονίζει το Der Spiegel.

EU summit to decide Turkey’s chapter fate....
ReplyDeleteAn EU summit is set to decide on whether to open a new negotiation chapter with Turkey, with EU-Turkey tension running high after the Gezi Park protests....
With all eyes turned to Luxembourg, where EU ministers will discuss the opening of a new negotiation chapter with Turkey, a senior Turkish government official has expressed Ankara’s hope that “common sense will prevail” to prevent the situation from becoming a deeper problem.
The Foreign Affairs Council of the EU will convene today at the level of foreign ministers, under the leadership of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, in a highly critical meeting where a decision to open the chapter on regional policies will be discussed.
Despite the approval of 26 member countries, Germany stands as the only country that seems opposed to the opening of this chapter due to the ongoing spat between Berlin and Ankara over the Gezi Park protests. If opened, the chapter on regional policies will be the first in three years and could have a positive effect in reviving the negotiation process.....

Verhandlungen über EU-Beitritt...
ReplyDeleteGespräche mit der Türkei auf der Kippe...Bagis bekräftigte nun, er sei "komplett falsch verstanden" worden. "Ich habe Kanzlerin Merkel nicht gedroht.......
Die Europäische Union entscheidet heute, ob die Beitrittsgespräche mit der Türkei fortgesetzt werden. Derzeit beraten die EU-Botschafter über die Öffnung eines weiteren sogenannten Beitrittskapitels. Später wollen noch die EU-Außenminister in Luxemburg beraten.
Deutschland hatte zuletzt Bedenken geäußert, die Niederlande ebenfalls. Gegner eines türkischen EU-Beitritts sehen sich nach dem gewaltsamen Vorgehen der türkischen Sicherheitskräfte gegen Demonstranten in ihren Vorbehalten bestätigt.
Vor allem zwischen Deutschland und der Türkei war es daher zu diplomatischen Spannungen gekommen. Die Botschafter waren wechselseitig einbestellt worden.
"Andere Optionen"
Eine Blockade der Verhandlungen durch die Bundesregierung will die Türkei offenbar nicht einfach hinnehmen. "Wir arbeiten an einer Antwort", sagte Europaminister Egemen Bagis der "Süddeutschen Zeitung". "Nur so viel: Die Türkei hat auch noch andere Optionen." EU und die Türkei brauchten sich gegenseitig, sagte Bagis. "Es ist nicht fair, die Eröffnung des neuen Verhandlungskapitels, das vor allem ein technisches ist, wegen politischer Zwänge zu blockieren." Äußerungen von Bagis am vergangenen Donnerstag, die wie ein Ultimatum an Kanzlerin Angela Merkel geklungen hatten, relativierte er.
Bagis bekräftigte nun, er sei "komplett falsch verstanden" worden. "Ich habe Kanzlerin Merkel nicht gedroht. EU-Beitritt: Verhandlungen mit Türkei könnten im Herbst beginnen....
ReplyDeleteTrotz der Gewalt gegen türkische Demonstranten sprach sich Außenminister Guido Westerwelle für EU-Beitrittsverhandlungen mit der Türkei aus. Çağlayan slams Merkel over Turkey remarks....
ReplyDeleteTurkish Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan has criticized some negative developments between Turkey and the European Union during his visit to Luxembourg and Belgium.
“The world should understand the message behind Belgium’s awarding Turkey’s economy minister with a royal medal while [German Chancellor Angela] Merkel is making statements of objection to Turkey,” he said.
Speaking to a group of journalists in Luxembourg, Çağlayan referred to Merkel’s objection to Turkey’s EU membership. “No prime minister should make such statements. She needs to be warned in a polite manner that such statements decrease the already-lowered support of EU membership in Turkey.” He added that there was no crisis between Turkey and the European Union now.
“Turkey’s membership is primarily in European countries’ interest,” he said.
Belgium would award him with a royal medal, Çağlayan said, adding that he expected Europe to get the message as well.
The German Foreign Ministry summoned Turkish ambassador Hüseyin Avni Karslıoğlu on June 21 in order to complain about EU Minister Egemen Bağış’s remarks, in which he had said Germany’s resistance to opening a new chapter in EU accession talks was linked to Merkel’s election campaign.
Ankara swiftly retaliated against Berlin’s decision and hours later summoned German ambassador Eberhard Pohl to the Turkish Foreign Ministry. The disagreements then cooled down.
