Iran will not be granted any significant sanctions relief by world
powers until it takes concrete steps and answers international concerns
over its nuclear program, U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs
Wendy Sherman told Al Arabiya’s Rima Maktabi in a special interview
aired on Wednesday.
Sherman said Iran is looking for sanctions relief because its economy has been hurt “very deeply,” and wants to bring relief to its people.
“We have not reached any agreement yet, we haven't lifted or removed any sanctions and indeed in the first step there would only be modest, limited reaction in terms of sanctions relief. The fundamental architecture of our sanctions will remain for a comprehensive agreement,” she said.
When Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with the foreign ministers of the P5+1 in October they discussed reaching a comprehensive agreement to end a dispute over Iran’s nuclear program within a year, Sherman said.
“What we want is to make sure that the program does not advance any further, not that they will stop everything but that it will not advance any further from where it is and may in fact roll back somehow while we negotiate a comprehensive agreement,” she said.
Sherman said the engagement with Iran would not affect U.S. relation with the Arab Gulf countries, saying Washington regards its relationship with these countries as a “high priority.”

ReplyDeleteSecretary of State John F. Kerry told Iran’s foreign minister Sunday that the United States will continue to enforce existing sanctions on Iran while bargaining over a deal to rein in Iran’s disputed nuclear program.

The private meeting furthers a tentative warming of three decades of estrangement between the two nations that began with election last year of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.................http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/kerry-tells-iran-that-existing-sanctions-will-stay-in-place-as-negotiations-continue/2014/02/02/54a225e0-8c32-11e3-9ed8-259977a48789_story.html?wprss=rss_homepage

France sees Iran opportunity if sanctions are lifted: Moscovici...
Delete(Reuters) - France will have "significant commercial opportunities" in Iran if sanctions are lifted, but Tehran first has to prove its good faith in abiding by nuclear undertakings, Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said on Sunday.
Moscovici was speaking on LCI television as a French business delegation travelled to the Iranian capital for meetings with officials and business leaders.
The three-day visit is intended to "convey the message that, if the situation improves, there will be significant commercial opportunities for France in Iran", Moscovici said.
"But the underlying message should be read as an (encouragement) to the Iranians to keep their word," he said, adding: "It's a very sensitive dossier.".............http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/02/us-france-iran-sanctions-idUSBREA110KR20140202?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

Hillary Clinton argues against additional sanctions on Iran....
ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON — Former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is urging Congress to resist imposing new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme, saying that “this is the time” to give diplomacy a chance to work.
Mrs Clinton, who leads the pack among potential Democratic presidential contenders for 2016, according to Reuters polling, said in a Jan 26 letter to Democratic Senator Carl Levin: “Now that serious negotiations are finally under way, we should do everything we can to test whether they can advance a permanent solution.”
Her comments came after Mr Levin wrote to her about the sanctions issue. The lawmaker released her letter yesterday.

Iran's foreign minister doesn't fear sanctions, says nuclear deal is possible with 'good will'....
DeleteThe prospect of a deal has lessened the risk of Israel or the United States taking military action against Iranian nuclear facilities to prevent Tehran acquiring a nuclear bomb.
Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Mohammad Zarif said on Monday a final deal with world powers on Tehran's nuclear program is possible within six months if there is good will. He said he was not worried about the US Congress trying to impose new sanctions.
US President Barack Obama used his State of the Union address last week to veto any legislation that threatens the talks with Iran. US senators, including some of Obama's Democrats, have co-sponsored a bill that would impose new restrictions on Iran if talks on a permanent accord falter.
But Iran has warned that it will walk away from negotiations — raising the risk of conflict in the Middle East — if the bill becomes law. It is now stalled in the Senate.
"With good will we can reach an agreement within six month," he said in a speech to the German Council on Foreign Relations. "I don't fear a decision in the US Congress ... The US president has promised to veto it."........http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/middle-east/iran/140203/iran-foreign-minister-nuclear-deal-possible-six-months

Iran FM: We may recognize Israel after Palestinian deal...
DeleteZarif says nuclear agreement possible within 6 months; unconcerned by new US sanctions threat because of Obama’s veto pledge.
After the problem with the Palestinians is resolved, the conditions that will enable recognition of the State of Israel will be established,” Zarif said.
“If the Palestinians are happy with the solution, then nobody — nobody — could prevent that from happening.”
However, the foreign minister also declared that no acceptable agreement had been proposed thus far to the Palestinians, and decried the “crimes” perpetrated against the Palestinian nation.
“We can’t do anything,” he said. “The Palestinians need recognition and afterward it will possible to discuss other solutions.”..... http://www.timesofisrael.com/iran-fm-we-may-recognize-israel-after-palestinian-deal/#ixzz2sHzKz4qa

Iranian Foreign Minister calls Holocaust ‘a horrible tragedy’...
ReplyDeleteBERLIN, February 03, (ITAR-TASS). Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is making a visit to Germany, has condemned the mass extermination of Jews by the Hitlerite regime.
As he spoke to the Phoenix TV channel, he said it was a horrible tragedy that was not to be repeated ever again.
The interview was shot in the super-fashionable Adlon Kempinski hotel, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the memorial to the slain Jews of Europe.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Hassan Rouhani’s predecessor in the presidential office in Teheran called the very fact and the scale of the Holocaust into question in his public speeches many a time, thus inviting sharp criticism on the part of the international community.
