Χάγη: Δικαίωση της Χιλής έναντι του Περού για κυριαρχία σε τμήμα του Ειρηνικού

EEZ  PERU-CHILE

  • Peru-Chile border redrawn by UN court at The Hague...
The United Nations' highest court has redrawn the maritime boundary between Peru and Chile after an acrimonious dispute between the two neighbours.
Judges at The Hague awarded Peru parts of the Pacific Ocean but kept rich fishing grounds in Chilean hands.
At stake were 38,000 square kilometres (14,670 square miles) of ocean and some of the world's richest fishing grounds.
In 2008, Peru asked the International Court of Justice to rule on the matter, saying the border was not legally set.
It wanted the boundary to extend roughly south-west, perpendicular to the point where the two countries' land border meets the ocean.
But Chile insisted it should extend from the coast parallel to the equator.
It cited treaties agreed in 1952 and 1954 which it said had settled the maritime boundary on that basis.
Both countries have pledged to abide by The Hague ruling.
Chilean President-elect Michelle Bachelet said she "regretted" what she called a "painful loss" for her country, but promised she would work to "implement the ruling gradually".
Her Peruvian counterpart, Ollanta Humala, said "Peru is pleased with the outcome" of the court decision, and would "take the required actions and measures immediately for its prompt implementation".....................http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25911867

  1. Peru wins maritime border dispute with Chile over key fishing grounds....

LIMA, Peru -- A territorial dispute between Chile and Peru ended Monday with an international court awarding Peru a triangle of Pacific Ocean territory covering thousands of square miles rich in fishing and other natural resources.

Peru filed the claim at the International Court of Justice in The Hague in 2008, alleging that marine boundaries had never formally been set by the two countries. Chile’s position was that the line had been defined in agreements signed in 1952 and 1954, which Peru argued were strictly fishing accords.

In a 15-1 vote, the court ordered that the common marine border be redrawn so that it will follow the current border for 80 miles from the coast but then will veer southwest for 120 miles, giving Peru the disputed “external triangle.”

The current border runs due west from the coast for a full 200 miles, a demarcation that Chile has enforced since it won a war in the 1880s with Peru and Bolivia.

In a statement issued after the verdict was announced, the Peruvian government said the decision applied to nearly 19,000 square miles of offshore territory, or more than half of the 37,000 square miles it originally sought.

Chile’s delegation said it was disappointed with the ruling but said the court's retention of the current border for the first 80 miles offshore respected the “commercial tranquillity” of Arica, Chile's northernmost big city and an important fishing and port hub.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala was expected to address the nation later Monday. In an indication of the importance he placed on the dispute, Humala had named former Foreign Minister Allan Wagner to head the delegation at The Hague.

Perhaps in anticipation that Chile would lose some territory, the head of the Chilean delegation, Juan Martabit, the country's ambassador to the Netherlands, told news media on Sunday that the decision shouldn’t be viewed as “triumph or disaster. … The countries have come to court with effective arguments in good faith and inspired by the rule of law.”

Humala invited 260 dignitaries to the presidential palace in Lima to hear the court's decision. Those invited included all members of congress, district governors and mayors.................http://www.latimes.com/world/worldnow/la-fg-wn-peru-territorial-dispute-chile-20140127,0,7509040.story#ixzz2rdCMrPmY

  2. Hague border verdict set to strengthen Chile, Peru ties...

(Reuters) - The maritime border between Chile and Peru was reset by an international court on Monday, in a compromise decision that politicians hope will end one of Latin America's last remaining border disputes.

The Hague-based International Court of Justice awarded more than half of a disputed 38,000-square-kilometer patch of ocean to Peru, but Chile retained the bulk of the valuable coastal fishing grounds within that area.

Both countries have pledged to abide by the ruling, which should in the long term improve ties between the two fast-growing economies, whose bilateral trade totaled $3 billion last year and is rising fast.

Settling a dispute that had its roots in the 1880s' War of the Pacific, presiding judge Peter Tomka said the court would leave it to the two countries to mark their maritime borders precisely.

"The court expects that the parties will determine these coordinates ... in the spirit of good neighborliness," he said.

The maritime border between the neighboring countries will be set by a straight line extending 80 nautical miles west from the point where their land borders meet and then heading southwest.

While Chile will have to cede territory in the deeper Pacific Ocean, it retains the most valuable fishing grounds.

The entire disputed area was estimated to be worth around $200 million a year in marine resources, but over half of that is an anchovy fishing area within 10 miles of shore.

A fishing industry source in Peru said the anchovy fishing would be unchanged by the verdict, although Peruvian fisherman would now be able to fish some deeper water species worth up to $40 million annually................http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/27/us-chile-peru-court-idUSBREA0Q1ER20140127?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews
