  2. Sanctions against Ukrainian leadership illegitimate – Lukashevich...

MOSCOW, February 20. /Itar-Tass/. Unilateral sanctions against Ukrainian politicians would be absolutely illegitimate, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Aleksandr Lukashevich has said about the United States’ intention to take unilateral measures against Ukraine’s political leadership.

“We have firmly pursued a policy to the effect sanctions can be only collective and adopted by the UN Security Council and that the United Nations alone can adopt and implement restrictive measures towards other states. In that sense we firmly adhere to the assumed commitments,” the diplomat said.

“As for individual sanctions the very same United States or the European Union have been trying to employ, we maintain that from the standpoint of international law such measures are absolutely illegitimate. Apparently, many other UN member-states think likewise,” Lukashevich said.

BRUSSELS, February 20. /ITAR-TASS/. European Union has taken a decision to impose restrictions on the issuance of travel visas to the Ukrainian officials, whom it deems responsible for the use of violence in Ukraine, Reuters said quoting Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino.

An EU ministerial gathering in Brussels also decided to freeze the officials’ financial accounts, should the latter be tracked down in the West.

According to Reuters, Bonino said the position had been agreed with the French, German and Polish foreign ministers currently staying in Kiev to hold negotiations with President Viktor Yanukovich.

"The decision is to proceed very rapidly, in the next hours, to a visa ban and asset freeze on those who have committed the violence," she told reporters.
