Olympic Truce Wall opened in Sochi

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and Vice-Premier of the Russian government Dmitry Kozak have opened the Olympic Truce Wall at the Coastal Olympic village in Sochi.

"I address all the members of the delegations: welcome to this ceremony, and you will see how sport breaks down all walls. People of different nationalities and religions live here together in harmony, and all this is thanks to the Olympic Games. They show us that the whole world can live in peace and be friends despite all differences," Bach said.

  • Kozak has noted that the Declaration of the Olympic Truce is one of the most important traditions.

  • "Today our country, Russia, has come in touch with one of the most important Olympic traditions - the Olympic Truce. The matter is that when all the best athletes of the planet come to the Olympic Games, it is an obvious reason for politicians, for all conflicting parties to forget about their conflicts", - Kozak emphasized.

Thomas Bach, former President of the IOC Jacques Rogge, Dmitry Kozak, President of the Olympic Committee of Russia Alexander Zhukov, President of the Sochi-2014 Organizing Committee Dmitry Chernyshenko, Sochi mayor Anatoly Pakhomov, and mayor of the Coastal Olympic village Elena Isinbayeva were the first to write their wishes about peace on the wall.

  1. Olympic Chief Pays Tribute to Victims of Volgograd Attacks...

The head of the International Olympic Committee has paid tribute to the victims of recent suicide bombings in the Russian city of Volgograd, as authorities remain on high alert for possible terrorist attacks at the Sochi Olympics.

Thomas Bach made his remarks during a ceremony Tuesday in an athletes compound at the Sochi Olympics village.

Bach said the ceremony is a "rebuke to those whose motives and goals stand in sharp contrast to the spirit of harmony and global solidarity" of the Sochi Games. He said people grieve for the innocent victims of conflict, especially the victims of Volgograd.
