UN Security Council to hold eighth urgent meeting on Ukraine on Tuesday

The UN Security Council on Wednesday will hold the eighth since the beginning of the month meeting on Ukraine. The permanent mission of Luxembourg that is presiding in the Security Council in March announced on Tuesday that the meeting was scheduled for 15:00, local time (23:00 pm Moscow Time).

"The Security Council will hold an open meeting on Ukraine at 15:00. Reports will be made by Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson and Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic," the mission said.


It has also became known that a plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly that had been initially planned for Thursday has been indefinitely postponed. "The General Assembly plenary meeting on the situation in Ukraine, scheduled for Thursday, March 20, has been postponed until further notice," Afaf Konja, spokeswoman for the General Assembly president, said.

The Ukrainian permanent mission to the UN said that the changes in the plans had been caused by the decision to call a Security Council meeting.     El Gobierno de Ucrania ha pedido a las Naciones Unidas que declare Crimea zona desmilitarizada y que obligue a las fuerzas prorrusas a abandonar la zona. Este llamamiento llega un día después de que el presidente ruso, Vladimir Putin, firmara la anexión por parte de la Federación Rusa de Crimea y de que fuerzas prorrusas se lanzan al control de las bases ucranianas en la Península de Crimea

    Además, Ucrania ha anunciado su intención de introducir un régimen de visados con Rusia en cuestión de muy pocos días y de abandonar la Comunidad de Estados Independientes (CEI), organización que agrupa a la mayoría de las antiguas repúblicas de la Unión Soviética.
