DHARAMSHALA: Reports coming out of Tibet say the Chinese security
forces opened fire on a crowd of over hundred Tibetans who were
protesting against the arrest of their village leader in Sershul county
in eastern Tibet on Tuesday (12 August).
The police firing took place following the arrest of Wangdak, the 45-year-old leader of Shugpa town in Sershul county in Karze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (incorporated into China’s Sichuan Province).
Wangdak had complained against the local officials for disparaging some Tibetan girls, who were part of a dance troupe ordered by the Chinese officials to perform in the neighbouring Sershul county.
In retribution, the local officials arrested him on Monday (11 Aug) for organising a recent horse racing and religious activities in the village without the local authorities’ permission. Wangdak, a native of Dege Dema, Lochuk at Shugpa town, is also head of the horse racing event in Dema. He is known for his efforts to support those who are poor and downtrodden.
Hearing the news of Wangdak’s arrest, hundreds of Tibetans gathered on Tuesday to protest and called for his immediate release. The Chinese police opened fire on the protestors, leaving over 10 Tibetans have sustained life-threatening injuries. The wounded include Wangdak’s son and a relative, both of whom have suffered bullet injuries.
Many Tibetans were arrested and many military were seen arriving at the village that evening. As the Chinese security forces laid siege to Shugpa village the next day, many of the local men fled to the hills fearing arrest. Their families members, mostly women and children, were beaten and interrogated.
