Two F/A-18 aircraft dropped 500-pound laser-guided bombs on a mobile artillery piece near Erbil, Pentagon press secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement.
He said the Islamic rebels had been using the artillery to shell Kurdish forces defending Erbil where US personnel are located.
"The decision to strike was made by the US Central Command commander under authorization granted him by the commander in chief," he said.
On Thursday US President Barack Obama authorized air strikes on Iraq to protect Christians and prevent "genocide" of tens of thousands of members of an ancient sect sheltering on a desert mountaintop from Islamic State fighters threatening to exterminate them.

ReplyDeleteTHE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Over the past two days, American pilots and crews have served with courage and skill in the skies over Iraq.
First, American forces have conducted targeted airstrikes against terrorist forces outside the city of Erbil to prevent them from advancing on the city and to protect our American diplomats and military personnel. So far, these strikes have successfully destroyed arms and equipment that ISIL terrorists could have used against Erbil. Meanwhile, Kurdish forces on the ground continue to defend the city, and the United States and the Iraqi government have stepped up our military assistance to Kurdish forces as they wage their fight.
Second, our humanitarian effort continues to help the men, women and children stranded on Mount Sinjar. American forces have so far conducted two successful airdrops -- delivering thousands of meals and gallons of water to these desperate men, women and children. And American aircraft are positioned to strike ISIL terrorists around the mountain to help forces in Iraq break the siege and rescue those who are trapped there.
Now, even as we deal with these immediate situations, we continue to pursue a broader strategy in Iraq. We will protect our American citizens in Iraq, whether they’re diplomats, civilians or military. If these terrorists threaten our facilities or our personnel, we will take action to protect our people.

Obama : Paris et Londres d’accord "pour soutenir l’effort humanitaire en Irak"...
ReplyDeleteLe président américain a déclaré, samedi, que la France et le Royaume-Uni étaient d’accord pour participer à l’aide humanitaire apportée aux civils irakiens. Barack Obama a ajouté qu’il faudrait "des semaines" pour résoudre la crise actuelle en Irak.
Le président français François Hollande et le Premier ministre britannique David Cameron ont donné leur accord pour soutenir l’effort humanitaire initié par les États-Unis dans le nord de l'Irak, afin de venir en aide aux civils irakiens, a indiqué, samedi 9 août, Barack Obama.
"Tous les deux ont exprimé leur soutien à nos actions et sont d'accord pour nous appuyer dans l'assistance humanitaire que nous offrons aux Irakiens, qui souffrent le plus", a déclaré le président américain lors d'une conférence de presse à la Maison Blanche.

"El fracaso a la hora de ayudar a construir una fuerza de combate creíble con los autores de las protestas contra el presidente sirio, Bashar al Assad, […] dejó un gran vacío que los yihadistas ahora han llenado", afirmó Hillary Clinton, exsecretaria de Estado de EE.UU. durante la primera Administración del presidente Obama, en una entrevista concedida a la revista 'The Atlantic'.
Las declaraciones de la político estadounidense coinciden con lo escrito en su reciente libro de memorias que cubren los años en los cuales estuvo al frente del Departamento de Estado, época en la cual fue considerada como una de los principales partidarios, en la Administración de Obama, de prestar más ayuda a la rebelión siria. Así pues, los actuales simpatizantes de Clinton argumentan que su postura de financiar y proveer de armas a los insurgentes sirios ha sido reivindicada por los recientes acontecimientos, indica el autor del artículo.
En este sentido, Clinton también dijo en la entrevista que la situación en Siria podría estar desarrollándose de un modo muy distinto "si hubiéramos tardado menos en entrenado y equipar al grupo central del Ejército Libre de Siria". De haber sido así, EE.UU. "por un lado habría tenido un mejor conocimiento de lo que estaba pasando en el terreno y, por otro, habría ayudado a poner en pie a una oposición política creíble".
"En este tipo de conflictos son los hombres duros y armados los que tienen más posibilidades de convertirse en los principales actores de una transición, y no aquellos que solo hablan desde el exterior", afirmó la exsecretaria del Departamento de Estado en referencia a "un grupo de sirios que pretendieron erigirse como la oposición política en el exilio" mientras los insurgentes "luchaban y morían" en el país.
"Por tanto, era necesario averiguar cómo podíamos apoyarlos [a los insurgentes] en el terreno, equiparlos mejor", dijo. Sin embargo, EE.UU. no empezó a aplicar el plan en el momento apropiado, perdió tiempo y su 'lugar vacante como patrocinador' fue ocupado por los yihadistas. Los grupos radicales 'convirtieron' a los rebeldes en sus aliados y actualmente están ganando más terreno en Oriente Medio, concluyó Clinton.
