U.S. Begins Airstrikes In Syria, Pentagon Says

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. and five Arab countries launched airstrikes Monday night on Islamic State group targets in Syria, expanding a military campaign into a country whose three-year civil war has given the brutal militant group a safe haven.
Using a mix of manned aircraft — fighter jets and bombers — plus Tomahawk cruise missiles, the strikes were part of the expanded military campaign that President Barack Obama authorized nearly two weeks ago in order to disrupt and destroy the Islamic State militants, who have slaughtered thousands of people, beheaded Westerners — including two American journalists — and captured large swaths of Syria and northern and western Iraq.

U.S. officials said the airstrikes began around 8:30 p.m. EDT, and were conducted by the U.S., Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. The first wave of strikes finished about 90 minutes later, but the operation was expected to continue for several more hours, according to one U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly by name about an ongoing mission.
  • Because the military operation was ongoing, no details could be provided yet, said Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon's press secretary. He said the military made the decision to strike early Monday. A White House official said Obama was being updated.
The strikes were carried out by manned Air Force and Navy aircraft, and the Tomahawk missiles were launched from U.S. ships in the northern Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush is in the Gulf.
Some of the airstrikes were against Islamic State group headquarters in Raqqa in eastern Syria. Military officials have said the U.S. would target militants' command and control centers, re-supply facilities, training camps and other key logistical sites.
  • "We will be prepared to strike ISIL targets in Syria that degrade ISIL's capabilities," Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told senators last week, using one of the acronyms for the Islamic State group. "This won't look like a shock-and-awe campaign, because that's simply not how ISIL is organized, but it will be a persistent and sustainable campaign.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that the plan "includes targeted actions against ISIL safe havens in Syria, including its command and control logistics capabilities and infrastructure." He said he and Dempsey approved the plan.................AP............http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/22/syria-airstrikes_n_5865344.html

  2. Arab role may be key to U.S. strikes in Syria: U.S. officials...

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama wants some Arab participation in air strikes against the Islamic State in order to expand the campaign to Syria, reflecting U.S. concerns that any long-term campaign must count on regional involvement, U.S. officials say.

Obama authorized air strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria almost two weeks ago and was briefed on U.S. war plans last week by the U.S. military's Central Command. But Obama held off on approving those plans as diplomats pushed ahead with efforts to forge a coalition.

Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Arab participation was essential for Obama as he looked to expand the American campaign of air strikes to Syria from Iraq, where the U.S. military has already carried out 190 strikes as of Monday................http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/09/23/us-syria-crisis-usa-military-idUSKCN0HI00520140923?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  3. USA starten Luftangriffe gegen IS in Syrien....

(Belga)

  6. ISIS infrastructure damaged in first Syria strikes...

Airstrikes carried out by the United States and its Arab allies bombed training camps belonging to militant groups in Syria for the first time on Tuesday, U.S. officials were quoted as saying, reportedly killing scores of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) fighters.

The U.S.-led attacks on militant positions have also disrupted ISIS infrastructure, a report by the Wall Street Journal quoted Pentagon officials as saying.

The officials did not provide estimates of casualties, but local residents have reportedly said many were killed in the attacks, including civilians.

The WSJ report also said the airstrikes “unleashed more than 160 missiles and bombs on targets inside Syria” belonging to ISIS and another al-Qaeda affiliated group Khorasan.

  9. A third night of US-led air strikes late on Wednesday targeted oil refineries in eastern Syria controlled by militants of the Islamic State group (IS), in a bid to choke off a crucial source of revenue for the militants.....

US, Saudi and Emirati warplanes broadened their bombardment to target the oil installations in eastern Syria that have helped fund the jihadist group's brutal rise from rebel faction to alleged global threat.

The raids focused on 12 targets in eastern Syria, where the IS extremists control small-scale oil refineries.

"These 12 targets were what we call modular oil refineries," Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told CNN.

"They were struck with precision-guided missiles by coalition aircraft. In fact, there were more coalition aircraft in the skies on these particular missions than US (planes)," he said................http://www.france24.com/en/20140925-syria-airstrikes-target-held-oil-refineries/

  10. Cameron wants UK to join in airstrikes in Iraq...

Prime Minister David Cameron said late Wednesday that he wanted the British Parliament to approve joining international airstrikes against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group in Iraq after Baghdad requested London’s help.

Cameron announced the move in his address to the U.N. General Assembly.

In doing so, Cameron also recalled parliament to secure its approval for military action.

Parliament, which was in recess, will reconvene on Friday to vote on allowing Britain’s Royal Air Force to hit ISIS targets in northern Iraq. The action has the backing of all three main parties and is expected to comfortably pass.

Cameron spoke after U.S. planes pounded ISIS positions in Syria for a second day. But the strikes did not halt the fighters’ advance in a Kurdish area where fleeing refugees told of villages burnt and captives beheaded, Reuters reported..................http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2014/09/25/Cameron-wants-UK-to-join-in-airstrikes-in-Iraq.html
