Hungary demands US disclose corruption evidence. Banning entry to the U.S. has become a "regular" practice due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Hungary on Friday urged the US government to release credible information behind its entry bans on Hungarians suspected of corruption.

Unless it releases relevant information, the United States will be seen as only wishing to exert influence on certain matters, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told a press conference.

According to the minister, so far the US embassy in Budapest had not disclosed the names of those who were banned from entering the United States, including some connected to the government.

Charge d'affairs Andre Goodfriend of the US embassy said that under 10 people were affected, though the number could change.

  • Ten Hungarian citizens, including three officials of the tax authority, have been banned by the United States from entering the country, one of those affected, a public figure, told the website of commercial television channel ATV on Friday....

The company of the businessman, who claims to have ties to the government’s economic circles, had several major government projects and won many public procurement tenders over the last few years. According to local news portal 444.hu, the USA-Hungary bout could go be traced back to earlier public procurement cases, in which U.S. businesses were courted to gain certain benefits, but these misdeeds led to investigations by the National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV). News portal index.hu reported that those banned from U.S. entry include Ildikó Vida, the President of NAV, one of her deputies and a department chief at the watchdog. 444.hu said Péter Heim, Chairman of economic think tank Századvég Gazdaságkutató, is also blacklisted. In the meantime, Hungary’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires M. André Goodfriend.

USA deals a heavy blow
The businessman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the revoking of his permanent admission to the U.S. is a disproportionate measure and it unnecessarily worsens the relationship between the U.S. and Hungary. The news was brought to him at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, saying the decision was made at the State Department on a presidential proclamation. To his knowledge two well-known Hungarian businessmen are on the list of ten people, as well as three officials of the NAV, but he has no information about who the others might be.

Banning entry to the U.S. has become a "regular" practice due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which had virtually the entire Russian economic and political elite banned from entering either the U.S. or the European Union...........http://www.portfolio.hu/en/economy/ten_hungarians_banned_from_entering_the_united_states.28545.html
