Russia refutes Western reports on naval emergencies. (Sweden intensifies search for suspected submarine near Stockholm)

The Russian Defense Ministry on Sunday refuted Western reports over a potential incident involving the country's submarine.

"There have been no irregular situations and, even less so, accidents involving Russian naval vessels," the ministry said in a statement.

The Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet reported Saturday that the country's military intelligence had intercepted radio signals between an area off the coast of Stockholm and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

"It was transmitted on a special frequency, used by Russia in emergency situations," it said, citing unnamed Swedish military sources.

Erik Lagersten, a spokesman for the Swedish Armed Forces, said the forces "are not in a position to deny or verify media news or speculations recently published about a missing foreign submarine."

"At the moment we are conducting an intelligence operation in the archipelago of Stockholm with optical reconnaissance as well as with naval vessels equipped with qualified underwater sensors ... to establish if there are or has been foreign underwater activities in the area," he said.

Nine countries have access to the Baltic Sea, namely Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Finland and Estonia. Only Germany, Poland, Russia and Sweden have their own fleets of submarines.

  1. Sweden says credible reports of foreign submarine in its waters...

(Reuters) - Sweden released on Sunday a grainy photo of a mysterious vessel in Stockholm's archipelago, as the military hunted for a foreign submarine or divers in the country's biggest such mobilization since the Cold War.

The search in the Baltic Sea less than 30 miles (50 km) from Stockholm began on Friday and reawakened memories of the final years of the Cold War when Sweden repeatedly sought out suspected Soviet submarines along its coast with depth charges.

The military showed one picture of what appeared to be a craft surrounded by white ripples. The witness who took the photograph said the vessel then submerged -- one of three sightings that the military said were credible reports..............http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/19/us-sweden-deployment-idUSKCN0I80T320141019?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  2. Swedish forces have “established contact with something” and are lowering equipment into the water near the island of Ingaro outside of Stockholm where the search for an alleged foreign submarine is currently underway, local media reported Tuesday....

"I can also see that they are lowering some equipment, but I do not have information about this. We are not commenting on the operation in detail," a spokesman for the Swedish Armed Forces is quoted as saying by the Aftonbladet newspaper.

According to the Swedish Dagens Nyheter newspaper, Swedish forces have "established contact with something”. Three military ships, including the HMS Stockholm corvette, a patrol boat and a minesweeper, have reportedly gathered in a small area in Ingarofjarden in Stockholm’s archipelago and monitoring devises are being lowered into the water.

Swedish forces first launched a major operation off the coast of Stockholm on Friday after receiving information, reportedly from a civilian, about the presence of an unknown underwater object in the region, suspected to be a foreign submarine........http://en.ria.ru/military_news/20141021/194382486/Swedish-Forces-Establish-Contact-With-Unknown-Watercraft-Reports.html

  3. Sweden May Use Military Force Against Alleged Submarine: Armed Forces Chief ...

Sweden may resort to the use of force against the alleged foreign submarine in the Stockholm archipelago, Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces Sverker Goranson said on Tuesday.

"If someone is in Swedish internal waters. . . I find it entirely appropriate to also use military force," Goranson is quoted as saying by the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.

He noted, however, that if a watercraft is found, Swedish forces would try to move it up to the surface without causing damage.

Goranson again stated that it is "likely that there is or has been underwater activity in Stockholm's archipelago", but refrained from elaborating due to operational security reasons..............http://en.ria.ru/world/20141021/194397890/Sweden-May-Use-Military-Force-Against-Alleged-Submarine-Armed.html

    1. Swedish Armed forces are ready to use force if they detect any foreign submarine in the waters of the Stockholm Archipelago, the supreme commander general said as the operation in search of the underwater threat entered its fifth day....

"Our aim now is to force whatever it is up to the surface... with armed force, if necessary," Sverker Göranson said, as cited by the Local.

He added that "the most important value of the operation - regardless of whether we find something -- is to send a very clear signal that Sweden and its armed forces are acting and are ready to act when we think this kind of activity is violating our borders.”

According to Göranson, submarines are “extremely difficult” to detect and Sweden has never managed to find them in the past..............http://rt.com/news/198036-sweden-sub-search-force/

  9. Sweden's submarine search heats up tension in Baltic region — Russian Defense Ministry...

The expansion of the zone of the search for “foreign submarine activity” by Sweden is heating up tension in the Baltic region, spokesman for the Russian Defence Ministry Major General Igor Konashenkov told reporters on Friday.

On Thursday, the General Staff of the Swedish army said the operation to search for “foreign submarine activity” in the Stockholm archipelago water area continues. The operation details were not disclosed. Swedish media say it is the search for a Russian submarine.

“Such unjustified actions of the Swedish Defence Ministry, backed by cold war rhetoric today only exacerbate tension in the region. They may result not in the strengthening of a separate country’s security, but in undermining of the foundations of marine economic activity in the Baltic Sea region,” Konashenkov said...................http://en.itar-tass.com/world/756183
