Such an extension would be under the terms of the Geneva accord that traded a temporary freeze on some aspects of Iran's nuclear activities for limited sanctions relief, the source said.
"We are still focused on agreeing to a kind of political agreement" which would not be written but which would allow for negotiators to fine-tune technical aspects of the agreement later, the source said amid tense marathon talks in Vienna.
"But if between now and this afternoon or this evening we don't get there, the solution is we consider an extension of the Geneva accord," he said.
"That could be for a period of six months or a year. We must absolutely avoid a climate of confrontation with escalation from one side and the other," the source said.
The United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany have been locked in talks with Iran since February to turn the interim Geneva accord reached a year ago into a lasting agreement by November 24.
Such a deal is aimed at easing fears that Tehran will develop nuclear weapons under the guise of its civilian activities.
The Islamic Republic hotly denies such an aim and insists its programme is entirely peaceful.

ReplyDeleteL'Iran envisage de prolonger les négociations nucléaires pendant six à douze mois en cas d'absence d'accord avec les Six d'ici dimanche soir, a indiqué une source au sein de la délégation iranienne à Vienne citée par les médias européens.
"Nous comptons toujours parvenir à un accord politique d'ici dimanche soir (...), mais si cet après-midi ou ce soir on n'y arrive pas, une extension de l'accord intérimaire de Genève pour une durée de six à douze mois sera examinée", a fait savoir la source.
Les grandes puissances soupçonnent depuis 2002 l'Iran de vouloir se doter de la bombe atomique sous couvert d'un programme nucléaire civil, ce que Téhéran a toujours démenti.
Aux termes de l'accord intermédiaire conclu le 24 novembre 2013 à Genève, l'Iran et les six médiateurs internationaux (Chine, Etats-Unis, France, Royaume-Uni, Russie et Allemagne) auraient dû élaborer avant le 20 juillet un document définitif garantissant le caractère pacifique du programme nucléaire iranien en échange d'une levée graduelle des sanctions décrétées contre Téhéran. Or, ce délai n'a jamais été respecté.
Finalement, les Six et Téhéran se sont donnés jusqu'au lundi 24 novembre pour solder ce dossier épineux qui empoisonne les relations internationales depuis plus de dix ans.

ReplyDeleteSergej Lawrow ist in Wien eingetroffen. Am Rande der Atomgespräche der Sechsergruppe mit dem Iran plant der russische Außenminister am Sonntag eine Reihe von bilateralen Treffen.
Die Sechsergruppe (fünf Veto-Mächte im UN-Sicherheitsrat plus Deutschland) und Teheran verhandeln seit Dienstag in Wien über ein Abkommen, das dem Iran die friedliche Nutzung der Atomtechnologie erlauben, zugleich aber verhindern soll, dass er Atomwaffen entwickelt. Laut Deutschlands Außenminister Frank-Walter Steinmeier waren die Seiten noch nie so nah an einer Lösung, dennoch sei der Ausgang der Gespräche weiter offen.
