International sanctions have been lifted on Iran in a historic deal after an international watchdog found the state had upheld promises to drastically cut its nuclear programme.
The UN's nuclear watchdog IAEA today confirmed that Iran had honoured promises aimed at ensuring that it could not work towards making an atomic weapon under the international agreement.
Federica Mogherini, of the UN, said that sanctions would be lifted immediately as she announced the landmark agreement together with the US Secretary of State John Kerry.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is the UN’s nuclear watchdog, has released a statement saying that Iran has carried out all of the measures required under its deal with six world powers.
Implementing the deal’s “Implementation Day” is now possible, the Vienna-based agency said.
