ReplyDeleteThe G20 should be focusing on their flagging economies rather than planning a military operation in Syria they can’t afford, analyst, Alex Korbel, told RT. France, in particular, is at full stretch, with 16 military campaigns abroad and an ailing economy.
The Syrian conflict has eclipsed the G20 meeting in Saint Petersburg, as the international community is unable to come to an agreement over a possible military strike. Washington has put forward a plan for military intervention against the Assad regime, which it believes is responsible for a chemical attack in a Damascus suburb on August 21.
RT: If the UN team of inspectors finds that chemical weapons were used in the Damascus attack, do you believe military intervention could be justified?
Alex Korbel: I think there is no case for military intervention in Syria for several reasons. The first reason is that there is no national interest for France or the US to actually intervene in Syria. The regime of Bashar al Assad was not a problem in the past and it is not clear why it’s now a problem for France and the US. There is no clear objective in the military intervention as it is now presented. Is it about maintaining the credibility of the US? What credibility exactly? The credibility to intervene in unnecessary wars? Is it to ban the use of chemical weapons? Then why does the US have chemical weapons in its arsenal? Is it to weaken the Bashar al Assad regime? In that case you need to put boots on the ground. If it is a humanitarian way to help the civilians, then locking on cruise missiles is not the right solution.
For all of these reasons the US and France has decided to move ahead with limited military intervention. But still there is a danger of falling down a slippery slope. What if a military intervention has no effect? Are we going to see full war? What would be the consequences in the region? I am thinking about Iran and Lebanon and I am thinking about a war less than 1000 kilometers south of Russia.
There is no broad international support for this war. Germany is against it, the UK is against it, China and Russia are against it. The only countries that are in favor are France, which has not yet consulted parliament, US and Israel and Saudi Arabia. Finally, public opinion is clearly against it everywhere. We saw it in the UK and the public polls in the US and France that the public is massively against military intervention in Syria.
RT: Given the climate of economic crisis in the EU, can France feasibly participate in another military operation?
AK: The economic situation of the EU countries is really bad. We can see in France that public debt is higher than 90 per cent of GDP. We see economic growth is less than 1 per cent. We see across G20 countries on average that unemployment is at 9 per cent and growing, that public debt is 64 per cent and growing, that economic growth is 1 per cent and weakening. What needs to be done is not to intervene militarily in another country.
France is already intervening in 16 countries worldwide. Clearly we don’t have any money to finance a seventeenth operation. The purpose of France, the US and any western power is not to ‘play the cop’ around the world but actually to maintain a sound economic policy first and then maybe lead by example on the international scene.

"Almost all the leaders who have attended the summit are closely following the massacre the Syrian regime carried out on its people and the leaders have expressed that an operation is extremely necessary against Damascus," Erdogan told reporters.

Monsieur Cameron s'est également prononcé pour cette option, mais le parlement du pays, exprimant la volonté du peuple britannique, s'y est opposé. Así lo ha asegurado el ministro en rueda de prensa tras reunirse con su homólogo de Estados Unidos, Chuck Hagel, en Washington.
"A mí no se me ha pedido nada desde el punto de vista militar, ni el apoyo de las bases ni nuestra presencia allí", ha afirmado Morenés. "Los Estados Unidos no han pedido nada militar", ha enfatizado.
Previamente, fuentes gubernamentales ya habían asegurado que el Gobierno español no aportará medios militares aéreos ni de otro tipo en caso de que se produjera una operación estadounidense en Siria. Estas fuentes señalaron que España ha firmado un documento junto a otros 10 países con la confianza en que la ONU se implicará más que hasta ahora. "Es un llamamiento a que se movilice", afirman.

ReplyDeleteAls einzige europäische Regierungschefin auf dem G-20-Gipfel hat Angela Merkel dem US-Präsidenten die Unterstützung der Syrien-Strategie verweigert. Deutschland suche eine gemeinsame Haltung der EU.
Deutschland hat als einziger europäischer G-20-Staat beim Gipfel in St. Petersburg die Syrien-Erklärung nicht unterzeichnet. In dem gemeinsam von allen anderen europäischen Regierungschefs unterschriebenen Dokument heißt es, die Beweislage deute eindeutig auf die syrische Regierung als Verantwortliche für den Einsatz von Chemiewaffen am 21. August. Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel unterschrieb das Dokument nicht.
Mit den Worten "wir fordern eine starke internationale Antwort auf diese schwerwiegende Verletzung internationalen Rechts" geht die Erklärung weiter. Diese Antwort solle deutlich machen, "dass derartige Gräueltaten sich nicht wiederholen können". Diejenigen, die diese Verbrechen begangen haben, müssten zur Verantwortung gezogen werden. Lediglich eine Militäraktion, wie sie die USA anstreben, wird nicht explizit in der Erklärung erwähnt.

Les pays de l’Union européenne ont cherché ce samedi à surmonter leurs divergences sur la Syrie en s’accordant sur la nécessité d’une réponse internationale «forte», mais sans aller jusqu’à soutenir le projet de frappes défendu par le secrétaire d’Etat américain John Kerry.
Au lendemain d’un G20 où il n’avait pas réussi à obtenir un large soutien international, le président américain Barack Obama a lancé un appel aux membres du Congrès américain pour qu’ils approuvent le principe d’une opération armée. «Nous sommes les Etats-Unis. On ne peut pas rester aveugle devant les images de Syrie que nous avons vues», a-t-il déclaré dans son allocution hebdomadaire à la radio.
Les Etats-Unis ont eu la satisfaction de voir l’Allemagne se joindre à l’appel lancé la veille par onze pays présents au G20 pour une «réponse internationale forte», de nature non spécifiée, aux attaques chimiques du 21 août dans la banlieue de Damas.
Accord au sein de l'UE
Sans reprendre exactement les termes de cet appel, les ministres des Affaires étrangères de l’UE sont tombés d’accord à Vilnius sur la nécessité d’une «réponse claire et forte». Cette formule est suffisamment vague pour satisfaire les 28 pays de l’UE, de la France, qui défend la même position que les Etats-Unis, à ceux, plus nombreux, qui sont très réticents à un engagement militaire sans l’aval de l’ONU. «Cet accord est un compromis typique du fonctionnement de l’UE», a commenté un diplomate.

The European Union has called a chemical weapons attack in Damascus a crime against humanity and says it was probably carried out by the Syrian government.
Following a meeting with the US secretary of state, John Kerry, EU foreign ministers said that any punitive military attack should not be carried out until the delivery of a report by United Nations inspectors.
Catherine Ashton, the EU's representative for foreign affairs issued a statement on Saturday calling the chemical attack a "blatant violation of international law, a war crime and a crime against humanity".
She said information from a wide variety of sources had confirmed the chemical attack and "seems to indicate strong evidence that the Syrian regime is responsible" as it is the only party "that possesses chemical weapons agents and the means of their delivery in a sufficient quantity".

DeleteVILNIUS - Germany will sign a Group of 20 statement supported by 10 nations calling for a strong international response to Syria's alleged use of chemical weapons, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Saturday.
"After we saw this excellent and very wise position of the European Union, the (German) Chancellor (Angela Merkel) and myself decided that we support now the G20 statement," Westerwelle said. While the statement called for a strong international response, it fell short of supporting military strikes on Syria that US President Barack Obama is considering.

Deutschland will die Erklärung des G-20-Gipfels zu Syrien nachträglich unterzeichnen. Die Bundesregierung habe erst abwarten wollen, bis die EU eine gemeinsame Position finde. Das teilte die EU-Außenbeauftragte Catherine Ashton am Samstag in Litauens Hauptstadt Vilnius mit. Die Minister hatten zuvor mit US-Außenminister John Kerry über den Konflikt in Syrien beraten.
Am Freitag hatten die USA und zehn weitere Teilnehmerstaaten des G-20-Gipfels in Russland in einer gemeinsamen Erklärung eine "starke internationale Antwort" auf den Giftgaseinsatz in Syrien gefordert. Deutschland war das einzige europäische G-20-Land, das sich zunächst nicht an der Aktion beteiligt hatte.
Entscheidung "aus vollem Herzen"
Westerwelle begrüßte "aus vollem Herzen" die gemeinsame Haltung der Europäer, die beim Außenministertreffen in Vilnius gefunden worden sei. Sie setze auf einen "politischen Prozess" und auf die Notwendigkeit, den UN-Chemiewaffeninspekteuren die Gelegenheit zu geben, "ihre Erkenntnisse wirklich vorzulegen".
Deshalb hätten Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) und er entschieden, "dass wir uns der gestrigen Erklärung, die in St. Petersburg abgegeben wurde, anschließen können".
Die EU-Außenbeauftragte Ashton begrüßte im Namen der EU-Außenminister die Ankündigung des französischen Präsidenten François Hollande, den UN-Bericht über den Einsatz von Chemiewaffen vor möglichen Militärschlägen gegen Syrien abzuwarten. Der Bericht soll feststellen, ob es am 21. August nahe der syrischen Hauptstadt Damaskus zum Einsatz von Giftgas kam. "We plan a major lobbying effort with about 250 activists in Washington to meet with their senators and representatives," an AIPAC source said on Saturday.

Frankreich, Großbritannien, Spanien und Italien hatten dagegen auf dem G20-Treffen in St. Petersburg am Freitag eine amerikanische Erklärung unterzeichnet, die eine entschiedene Antwort auf den Giftgas-Einsatz forderte.
"Kein militärischer Einsatz"
Außerdem sprach sich Merkel mit Nachdruck für eine politische Lösung des Bürgerkriegs aus. Der Einsatz von Chemiewaffen sei ein "schwerwiegender Tabubruch, eine Verletzung des Völkerrechts, die eine eindeutige Antwort der internationalen Staatengemeinschaft erfordert", sagte Merkel der "Bild am Sonntag". Eine friedliche Zukunft Syriens aber könne nur in einem politischen Prozess erreicht werden.
"Es muss sichergestellt werden, dass sich ein Einsatz dieser schrecklichen Massenvernichtungswaffen nicht wiederholt und die Verantwortlichen zur Rechenschaft gezogen werden", betonte Merkel. ReplyDeleteAuf dem G20-Gipfel hatten vier große Euro-Länder eine Erklärung zur Syrien-Politik unterzeichnet – zunächst ohne Deutschland. Kanzlerin Merkel kritisiert den Vorstoß der Partner und gibt eine Erklärung für ihr Zögern.
DüsseldorfBundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel hat ihre nachträgliche Unterschrift unter eine von den USA beim G20-Gipfel vorgelegte Syrien-Erklärung mit dem Wunsch nach einer einheitlichen europäischen Haltung verteidigt. Die CDU-Chefin sagte am Sonntag in Düsseldorf, ihr sei es vor allem darum gegangen, alle 28 EU-Länder einzubinden. Die Opposition warf ihr einen Schlingerkurs vor. SPD-Chef Sigmar Gabriel sprach von einem "Totalausfall der deutschen Außenpolitik." Am Samstag einigten sich die EU-Außenminister auf einen gemeinsame Position. Daraufhin stellte sich auch die Bundesregierung hinter den US-Text, den alle europäischen G20-Länder außer Deutschland bereits am Vortag unterzeichnet hatten.
US-Präsident Barack Obama hatte auf dem G20-Treffen am Freitag in St. Petersburg keinen Rückhalt der Schwellenländer für einen Militärschlag erhalten. Elf Staaten hatten daraufhin eine von den USA erarbeitete Erklärung unterzeichnet, in der eine entschiedene Antwort auf den Giftgas-Einsatz vom 21. August gegen syrische Zivilisten gefordert wird. Ein Militärschlag wird darin nicht erwähnt. Neben Deutschland nahmen auch Frankreich, Großbritannien, Italien und Spanien an dem Gipfeltreffen der Regierungen der 20 größten Industrie- und Schwellenländer teil.

Άλλες 14 χώρες καταδίκασαν εγγράφως την επίθεση στη Συρία...
ReplyDeleteΑκόμη 14 χώρες έχουν υπογράψει την δήλωση καταδίκης της Συρίας για την επίθεση με χημικά όπλα την 21η Αυγούστου και αξιώνουν μία διεθνή απάντηση προκειμένου να λογοδοτήσει η συριακή κυβέρνηση, ανακοίνωσε σήμερα ο Λευκός Οίκος.
Με τις νέες αυτές προσθήκες, ο αριθμός των χωρών που υποστηρίζουν τη δήλωση της καταδίκης ανήλθε στις 25, την ώρα που οι ΗΠΑ πασχίζουν να εξασφαλίσουν μία όσο το δυνατόν ευρύτερη διεθνή συναίνεση για να πραγματοποιηθούν στρατιωτικές επιθέσεις στη Συρία.
Στη νέα ομάδα των χωρών που υποστηρίζουν την καταδίκη της Συρίας συμπεριλαμβάνονται η Αλβανία, Ηνωμένα Αραβικά Εμιράτα, το Κατάρ, η Κροατία, το Κόσοβο, η Δανία, η Εσθονία, η Λιθουανία, το Μαρόκο, η Ονδούρα, η Ουγγαρία και η Ρουμανία, πρόσθεσε ο Λευκός Οίκος.
