Nida, with winds of up to 151 kph, reached the southern Chinese coast at 03:35 local time (19:35 GMT Monday), moving in a northwest direction at a speed of some 25 kph.

The typhoon is expected to lash some of China's most populous cities Tuesday including Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Macau, Shenzhen, Dongquan, Foshan and Zhaoqing, where extreme caution has been taken, and also some other southern provinces and regions.

Authorities have asked people in the risk-prone cities to store sufficient food and other needs for three days in their homes and refrain from going out on the streets.

Trading at the Hong Kong stock exchange was suspended, in Guangzhou, schools have been shut along with some work places, and people have been urged to stay home with the exception of rescue personnel responding to possible accidents.

Shelters have been set up, and all trains, flights and ships have been canceled in the city until further notice.

On the nearby shores, more than 2,000 construction workers building the great Hong Kong-Zhuhau-Macau bridge, which unites the two ends of the Pearl River delta, were evacuated and more than 2,200 employees of nearby oil platforms were evacuated and brought to land.

School classes were also suspended in Shenzhen, neighboring Guangzhou, and other cities in the South, as well as several rail services canceled.

In Guizhou province, north of Guangzhou, three people were killed and another was injured Monday due to high winds and hail which affected the Sandu region.
